Our History and Future
History
For more than 159 years, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has used the latest media of its era to share the hope found in Holy Scriptures with their fellow man. Publishing, radio, and television each began as faith ventures fuelled by an urgent sense of mission.
In the 21st century, the church continued to follow God’s leading by establishing its own global television network—Hope Channel. This amazing journey began in 1995 with the first satellite "NET" Bible seminar broadcast in North America featuring Pastor Mark Finley.
Two years later, the World Seventh-day Adventist Church joined the effort and took NET meetings to an international audience under the auspices of what became the newly formed Adventist Global Communication Network or AGCN. The name changed in 2001 to Adventist Television Network (ATN) to better reflect the growing impact television was making.
In October 2003, ATN officially launched Hope Channel as a 24-hour television network. This unique new network grew out of a desire to reach billions of people 24/7 with programming for the different languages and cultures of the world.
“We envisioned a channel broadcasting direct-to-home 24 hours a day that could reach the masses with postive programs adapted for the various cultures of the world,” recalls Ted Wilson, past chairman of ATN Operating Committee.
Hope Channel continues to be the official broadcaster of the NET satellite Bible seminars. The results of these informative and life-changing seminars has been astounding. More than two million people have discovered a better spiritual relationship and experienced the joys of water baptism.
During the past few years, Hope Channel has grown to include a global family of channels that broadcast culturally relevent programs in different languages.
Today, Hope Channel consists of multiple global channels that can be seen by hundreds of millions of homes and our own business network of 30,000 downlink sites.
Future
Hope Channel continues to grow as it seeks to meet the needs of different people groups. New channels are being developed in the Arabic language for Islamic cultures, in Mandarin for Chinese, and the Russian language for Russia and countries of the former USSR.
Media centers are being opened and expanded in strategic locations to ensure production of quality programming. Project Hope is our remote production studio that is scheduled to produce hundreds of shows at a time on location in several countries each year.
Live satellite NET seminars are still a very important part of our core business. We conduct several dozen each year that benefit hundreds of thousands of viewers. Soon we will be offering a training component to help increase the effectiveness and enhance the experience of these live events.
The distribution of Hope Channel through new means and into new areas is always a top priority. We are constantly adding new cable markets, television station rebroadcasters, internet sites, and direct-to-home satellite.
You can be part of our future in two very important ways. First, you can watch Hope Channel regularly and benefit from the life changing programs we offer. Second, you can share in our mission by becoming a sponsoring partner. Hope Channel is a viewer supported network that depends upon the generosity of its viewers to sustain our current channels, develop new channels, and create more TV shows. You can learn how to partner with us by visiting our Support Hope page.
There is no question that broadcast television and the internet reach more people than any other modern media. Hope Channel is using both of these powerful communication tools to give the hope of salvation to millions around the world. Please join us as a Hope Channel partner today.
